The Red Road
Born in a village the maps had forgotten, Kwame was the first of his family to leave, and the first to return. He came home with a medical degree and a promise that no mother in the delta would deliver alone.

Physician, teacher, and founder of the Rivers Clinics — for six decades he walked the red roads of the delta carrying a leather satchel and an unshakeable belief in his neighbours.

The Life, in Chapters
Born in a village the maps had forgotten, Kwame was the first of his family to leave, and the first to return. He came home with a medical degree and a promise that no mother in the delta would deliver alone.
Between 1961 and 2004 he opened forty-one small clinics along the river bends, each one built with local hands and roofed with corrugated tin donated by ferry captains who had grown up under his care.
In his last years he refused every honour except a wooden bench outside his first clinic, where he read letters aloud to the children of the children he had delivered.
